The CJA is holding a public debate on where the Indian government’s constitutional changes in Jammu and Kashmir leave the troubled state. Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government overturned 70 years of history when it cancelled its status as a full state and ended its special rights and privileges. Although the move has considerable support in India, the manner in which it was done, by evading constitutional requirements, has been widely condemned, as has the long security curfew and detention of hundreds of people, including political leaders. A panel of distinguished experts on Kashmir and South Asia will be discussing the implications and risks of the government’s move. The debate will be held in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association room at Westminster on Tuesday September 17. For full details go to
